Narooma’s name comes from an aboriginal word meaning ‘clear, blue water’. Wagonga Inlet continues to be a focal point for Aboriginal people’s connection to the area. It is used as a meeting place for teaching, resource collection and camping. Many places around Wagonga Inlet are significant to Aboriginal people for day picnics, oyster, scallop and fishing, and women’s gatherings to collect bush medicine and foods.
It is a popular tourist destination for many all year round and also hosts the Annual Narooma Oyster Festival.
